Before I write about the topic, I cannot but have a smile on my face. This topic is something I wanted to write about as it is such an interesting perspective into how the human mind thinks. Ghosts, spirits, and others have made their way into real estate with a very weird twist.
Now when you do multi-families, some of them more than 100+ years old, you have had your share of deaths in the apartments, bodies being taken out after a few days, and so on. News spreads with old standing tenants, and every now and then, your maintenance manager gives you a call almost after dinner time about something suspicious. I once got a call from my manager RB about a possibility of the ghost in Apt 4. I said ‘hold ’em there, and I am coming over. I am not sure if it was my boy scout mentality that made me say that but the confidence he got when he saw me there like that just made him feel so much braver. Funny enough this had never come up with our relationship in the future. The key lesson, everyone needs emotional support.
In another instance, there was a house that we needed vacating. The lady renting there with her husband was about to have a baby. They wanted to live there and have the baby there and eventually buy the house. All that was not a possibility as the owners were moving back to the country and that was the only house they knew. So… at the walk-over inspection, I am told that at night right before 2 am, a white lady with white clothes is walking around in the veranda and other spaces. I was dumbfounded and asked how as a property manager I have failed my investors by not collecting additional rent! After a few laughs, the tenant was also happy to make her way to her next destination. Lesson learned, you can always see different perspectives on things, but choosing the lighter side keeps you lean.
